Aquino ally killed in Philippine helicopter crash

A political ally of Senator Benigno Aquino, who is set to soon be named Philippine president, and five others were killed in a helicopter crash on Monday, an army spokesman said.Quezon governor Rafael Nantes was returning to Manila from his province, about 100 km (60 miles) south of the capital, when the single-engine R-44 private chopper crashed in a crowded community near Lucena City, Colonel Generoso Bolina told reporters.Nantes, who lost his re-election bid in last week's national election but was in office until June 30, was a member of the small Liberal Party.Aquino, the Liberal Party's presidential candidate, has a commanding lead in unofficial vote counts and should be officially declared the winner by Congress in coming weeks.Nanates, two bodyguards and the pilot, and two children in a house hit by the helicopter were killed, Bolino said."The governor was just two minutes up in the air when the helicopter went out of control and crashed in a big fire ball," Bolino said, citing witnesses account.Alfonso Cusi, head of the civilian aviation agency, said he has dispatched investigators to determine the cause of the crash, but ruled out a terrorist attack.Quezon is among provinces where Maoist-led guerrillas remain active in poor rural communities, attacking communications and power stations and transmission lines.(Reporting by Manny Mogato; Editing by John Mair)
