Bajaj to increase its motorbike production: Sridhar

Hyderabad, May 10 (PTI) The second largest two wheeler maker, Bajaj Auto will ramp up its production to meet the growing market demands, company''s CEO (two wheelers) S Sridhar said here today. "The present capacity of plant - 2.75 lakh units per month will be increased to 3 lakh units in three to four months time," Sridhar said, adding they will keep on expanding the production capacity according to market demand. Bajaj currently has three manufacturing plants at Waluj near Aurangabad, Pantnagar in Uttarakhand and Chakan near Pune. Bajaj has a sales target of 4 million vehicles this year including 3.6 million motorcycles consisting largely the Discover and Pulsar range. Sridhar, who announced the launch of new Bajaj Discovery -150 here, said they are expecting 30 to 35 thousand units sale from this variant. "We are going to launch two more variants of our popular brands in this financial year," Sridhar said refusing to name the brands. Discover-150 is manufactured at Waluj and Pantnagar plants. Presently Bajaj has 17 per cent share in the two wheeler market and with the launch of Discover-150, they expect the percentage to go up by another 5 to 6 per cent, Sridhar said. The bike, which is priced at Rs 46,000 (ex-showroom price Delhi), will be launched in a phase-wise manner across the country. The model adheres to the latest BS-III emission norms. He said the exports of Bajaj bikes stood at 60,000 last year and it may go up to 80,000 this year. He admitted that there is 3 to 4 weeks waiting period for their popular brand Pulsar and said it would be set right once the production levels go up. Sridhar, who declined to confirm when the Bajaj-KTM sports bike will be launched, said the vehicle is being developed according to plan and schedule. Bajaj, which has runway success with its Pulsar brand, entered into a pact with KTM for rolling out global bikes in India. The new bikes under Bajaj-KTM brand are expected to roll out by the end of 2011, a Bajaj official said.
