Car sales rise 39.5 percent in April: SIAM

New Delhi, May 10 (IANS) Indicating robust consumer demand despite a rise in prices, car sales in India grew by 39.5 percent to 143,976 units in the first month of this fiscal from 103,227 units sold in April 2009, data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) here Monday showed.Companies exported 37,479 cars in April against 29,307 units in the same month last year - a jump of 27.88 percent.The total vehicle sales in India rose 25.24 percent to 1,120,081 units in April 2010 from 894,380 a year ago. The exports witnessed a healthy 87.61 percent growth at 201,543 units as against 107,424 vehicles for the same month last year, the data showed.The domestic sales of passenger vehicles, including cars and utility vehicles, grew by 33.93 percent to 182,181 units in April 2010 from 136,026 units in the year-ago period.The passenger vehicles' exports went up by 28.63 percent to 37,893 units from 29,459 units in April 2009.The domestic sales of two wheelers, including scooters, motor cycles and mopeds, witnessed 22.07 percent growth reaching up to 855,670 units from 700,987 in April 2009.Its exports jumped 96.91 percent to 132,458 vehicles as against 67,267 units in the year-ago period.The commercial vehicles' sales in India grew by 64.49 percent to 49,086 units from 29,842 and their exports increased by a whopping 132.68 percent to 3,888 vehicles from 1,671 in April 2009, the data showed.
