CII for limited tenure for sports body office bearers

New Delhi, May 17 (PTI) India''s funds-starved sports federations need to be transparent and fix tenures for office bearers if they want to attract corporate sponsors, industry chamber CII said today. "Federations also have to attract us. they have to make it (functioning) transparent, they have to make workable and they have to change also.," CII''s newly elected President Hari S Bhartia told PTI in an interview. When asked if the unspecified term of office bearers in many sporting bodies was stopping corporates from coming out and support sports, Bhartia said: "Nothing should be permanent." Earlier this month, the sports ministry had announced a policy under which National Sports Federation president will have to step down after 12 years in office, with or without a break, and eight years for secretary. This was opposed vociferously by various federations in India spearheaded by the Indian Olympic Association stating government intervention would invite an international ban. Supporting the government''s move, Bhartia said: "I am the President of CII only for one year." In contrast, BJP leader VK Malhotra has been heading the Archery Association of India for more than three decades. Akali Dal leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa is entering the 14th year at the helm of the Cycling Federation of India, while VK Verma, a bureaucrat, is heading the Badminton Association of India for 12 years. Congress leader Captain Satish K Sharma has been heading the Aero Club for 24 years, while B S Adityan, a businessman, has been at the helm of the Volleyball Federation of India for 12 years. Bhartia also said that the chamber has created a new committee on sports to explore opportunities for businessmen in sports activities. He said CII''s sports committee will try to find ways on "how corporates can engage in different areas of sports, what type of roles corporates can play as promoters, as managers, what are the business opportunities".
