Cong yatra hits roadblock, ends early

The Congress Party's much-hyped rath yatra that entered Allahabad from Sonebhadra district on April 25 was concluded on Monday - 21 days ahead of its scheduled completion on May 31.It concluded at a public meeting at Lalgopalganj in trans Ganga area where UP in-charge Digvijay Singh, Rita Bahuguna Joshi, Pramod Tiwari and other senior leaders addressed the gathering. While the ostensible reason for the early conclusion of the yatra was a technical snag in the vehicle converted into a rath, party sources attributed the same to infighting and absence of unity among the senior party functionaries.Sources said that the handing over charge of the yatra for Allahabad and its adjoining districts to Shekhar Bahuguna - the brother of Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee president Rita Joshi - alienated the anti-Joshi faction."The moment Shekhar Bahuguna was made the in-charge of the yatra, it was a foregone conclusion that the yatra would get criticism and would face infighting. Moreover, Shekhar Bahuguna, the in-charge of the yatra did not stay at night in Handia, Phoolpur, Soraon, Jhusi whereas it was made compulsory in the yatra guidelines," disclosed a Congress leader adding that the rath remained stationed at Shekhar Bahuguna's house on May 8 and 9. It was removed from there immediately after some mediapersons inquired about it.As per the party's schedule, the yatra was supposed to cover Pratapgarh and Kaushambi districts in the first phase by May 31."The yatra was successful in every respect. The vehicle was stationed because it had developed a technical snag. Today it moved to Lalgopalganj. The yatra was concluded on Monday after some changes were made in the programme. Kaushambi and Pratapgarh would be covered in the second phase", said Bahuguna attributing the below par performance to the scorching heat.
