Race stewards fined Ferrari $20,000 for a near-miss in the pit lane between Fernando Alonso's car and Nico Rosberg's Mercedes during the final phase of Spanish Grand Prix qualifying on Saturday.Alonso, who qualified fourth next to former McLaren team mate Lewis Hamilton for his first home race as a Ferrari driver, was not personally punished for an incident that could have had serious consequences for bystanders. The double world champion, who almost collided with Rosberg's car when he swept out of the garage and into the German's path, said he had been unsighted after Rosberg radioed his team to say the Spaniard should be penalised."I didn't see Nico unfortunately, the angle of vision is not perfect to see anyone coming from the pits so you rely on your mechanic," he said.Rosberg told reporters it was lucky the cars had not touched and nobody had been hurt."There were some photographers standing there who I just spoke to now and... if we collided... in that situation, parts start flying then it gets very dangerous for them," said the German."So it's a serious thing and I think it's correct that they got a fine and they really need to try and do better next time. That was not good."The Circuit de Catalunya stewards said in a statement that after hearing evidence from a Ferrari representative, they had found the team had breached the sporting regulations.(Reporting by Alan Baldwin, editing by Pritha Sarkar; To query or comment on this story email sportsfeedback@thomsonreuters.com)
