New Delhi, May 28 (PTI) The government has allocated 19.08 lakh tonne sugar for June, which is nearly 10 per cent lower than the previous month. "We have allocated less sugar for June as demand is stable," a senior government official said here today. Out of the total allocation for June, the government has earmarked 2.08 lakh tonne as levy sugar (meant for supply through ration shops) and the remaining 17 lakh tonne for the open market (non-levy sugar). The Centre had allocated 17.5 lakh tonne non-levy sugar in the same month last year. The government fixes the quantity of the sweetener to be released in the open market and ration shops every month. The non-levy quota for June would comprise 0.5 lakh tonne refined sugar and 3.7 lakh tonne refined sugar processed out of imported raw sugar and 12.8 lakh tonne normal quota. Domestic sugar production is estimated to be at 18.5 million tonne in the 2009-10 crop year (October-September) against the annual demand of 23 million tonne and the shortage is being met through imports. The Centre had allowed duty-free imports of raw and refined sugar from February 2009 to bridge shortfall and curb rising prices. The country has so far imported 6 million tonne sugar since last year.
