A Labour member of parliament has urged British Prime Minister Gordon Brown to stand down after the main opposition Conservatives became the largest party in Thursday's election.The election was inconclusive, with the Conservatives falling short of an outright majority in parliament. The Conservatives have begun talks with the smaller opposition Liberal Democrats about an alliance to end Labour's 13-year rule."Whatever happens in the next few days, Gordon Brown should not lead Labour into any future election and he should stand down before the next Labour Party Conference," John Mann, MP for Bassetlaw in central England said in a statement."On the doorstep, throughout the election campaign I found that there was a lot of support for Labour's approach on the economy, health and education, but there was little support for Gordon Brown to be Prime Minister," he said."Gordon Brown has had a good run and whilst he was an excellent Chancellor (finance minister) he has been seen as a poor Prime Minister who is out of touch and aloof. Labour lost votes because of this," he added.Mann is the first MP to call for Brown to step down following the election. Brown, who served as finance minister for a decade before becoming prime minister in 2007, has survived a number of attempts by party rebels to oust him.As premier he has had to deal with the worst recession in decades, an increasingly bloody war in Afghanistan and a parliamentary expenses scandal that has tarnished the reputation of all the main parties and resulted in reform of the system.
