Leader of robbers`` gang killed in police encounter

Lakhimpur, May 8 (PTI) The alleged kingpin of an inter- state gang of bank robbers was gunned down and three of his accomplices were nabbed by Special Operation Group of police in Lakhimpur-Kheri district, a senior officer said here. Sanjay Sansiya was killed in an encounter with police in Oel town, 12 km from here, Amitabh Yash, Superintendent of Police of neighbouring Sitapur district, told reporters. "Sansiya was the leader of an inter-state gang of bank robbers," he said adding that the three arrested men were identified as Rohit, Pankaj and Dipak. Yash said, "Sansiya and his accomplices had been involved in a number of bank robberies and several other criminal incidents in Punjab, Gujarat, Bihar and several districts of Uttar Pradesh." Acting on a tip-off that the gang members were moving towards Sitapur on their way to Lucknow, the SOG of Sitapur police laid a trap and intercepted them in Oel. The gang members opened fire on the police party, Yash said adding, "In retaliatory firing, Sansiya was killed. The three others were nabbed," Yash added.
