MIM tells panel it prefers unified Andhra Pradesh

Hyderabad, May 10 (IANS) The Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) Monday told the Srikrishna committee that it is opposed to bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh but if the split becomes inevitable, Rayalseema should be merged with Telangana to form a new state with Hyderabad as its capital.The political party, which has considerable following among Muslims in Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana, told the panel that it is against the idea of making Hyderabad a union territory.A delegation of MIM leaders led by its president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi made a presentation before the five-member panel here.The panel, formed by the central government in February this year to look into the demands for and against separate statehood to Telangana region, Monday began the third phase of consultations with political parties.The MIM, which has already submitted a representation to the committee, presented its arguments in support of its demand.Owaisi told reporters that his party preferred continuance of the present status of Andhra Pradesh.'However, if bifurcation becomes inevitable, there can be no compromise on Telangana,' he said.The MIM delegation also wanted certain assurances for the protection of lives and property of Muslim community and promotion of Urdu language in both the states.Former Supreme Court judge B.N. Srikrishna, who is heading the panel, asked certain questions to MIM leaders about their stand.Later, a delegation of main opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leaders from Andhra region met the committee and presented their views. They opposed bifurcation of the state.Leaders of TDP from Ralayaseema and Telangana regions will also meet the committee separately. Various other parties will also make their presentations over the next two days.In the first two phases, the committee heard the views of Telangana Rashtra Samiti, Praja Rajyam Party, the Communist Party of India and the Communist Party of India-Marxist.
