Pune leg of Asian GP to be held on June 1

Pune, May 28 (PTI) About 250 athletes from 22 Asian countiers, including India, will participate in the first leg of the Asian Grand Prix to be held at the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex at Balewadi here on June 1. Uzbekistan''s Guzel Khubbieve, who had won the Asian Games 100m gold in Doha four years ago at the age of 30, will be one of the start attractions of the USD 25000 prize money day-night event which will have 10 men''s and 11 women''s discipline. A day ahead of the meet, more than 250 athletes will take part in the Indian GP to pick the Indian squad for the event. There will be high medal hopes from discus thrower Krishna Poonia and middle distance runner Manjit Kaur. Poonia had won the Asiad bronze with 61.53m and she has recently cleared her best (63.69m) last month in the United States. Manjit had won the silver in the Asian Games with 52.17s with her best timing of 51.05s coming up last year. The second and third legs of the meet will be held in Bangalore and Chennai, organising secretary Prahlad Sawant told reporters. The Indian Olympic Association president, Suresh Kalmadi, said the Asian GP will give a boost to the athletes ahead of the Commonwealth Games in Delhi from October 3-14. "Pune had successfully hosted Commonwealth Youth Games in 2008. This time around, it will be a good opportunity for the Indians to tune themselves up against the Asians ahead of the CWG and Asian Games this year," said Kalmadi. .
