This Israeli pen can detect the undetected

A PEN, costing as little as Rs 750 ($25), could be the answer to a safe flight. The pen, designed by Israeli scientist Ehud Keinan, can detect peroxide-based and other improvised explosives which are otherwise undetectable by normal detectors. It was these peroxide-based improvised explosives which had been smuggled on to the aircraft in some of the recent failed attempts to blow up planes. The pen called ACRO-P.E.T (peroxide explosives tester) is manufactured partially in Taiwan and compiled in Israel before being commercially exported.Keinan, whose pen was recently launched in India, hoped of being able to ''tweak'' his invention to detect narcotics and other chemical substances through it in future. '' The Chinese agencies had acquired it during the Beijing Olympics and later many firms and agencies from America followed suit after some of the recent on-flight scares,'' said Keinan. He joked that while his product resembled a pen, one shouldn't really try writing with it as it had a rubber tip.''In case of improvised explosives, especially TATP (peroxide) based, one can't easily determine whether the powder is harmless or actually a deadly bomb. This device simplifies everything and clarifies these life-saving doubts in a matter of seconds,'' he said.Keinan cited the examples of the ''underwear bomber'', who had managed to sneak in an improvised explosive device from Amsterdam̢۪s Schipol Airport enroute Detroit and also the now famous Richard Reid of al- Qaeda, who carried the TATP trigger for the bomb in his shoes and later became famous as the shoe-bomber.''Had this device been with any of the ground staff, they could have established the presence of the substance by rubbing the rubber tip of the pen on the suspicious surface or powder,'' Keinan said.Reproduced From Mail Today.
