New Delhi, May 11 -- Four months before the Commonwealth Games begin, the traffic department is facing an acute manpower crunch. Sources in the department claim Delhi needs more than 2,000 additional personnel to ensure traffic doesn't go for a toss while the Games are in progress. Against a sanctioned strength of 5,587, the department only has 4,417 personnel to regulate traffic at present. "Traffic police will soon recruit over a thousand men as constables and sub-inspectors," said Special CP (Traffic) Ajay Chadha. "But this measure is not likely to help in ensuring efficient traffic management during the Games." Chadha's fear flies in the face of commissioner Y.S. Dadwal's promise of efficient traffic management during the Games. The recruitment will take place in mid-September, just a fortnight before the Games begin, leaving very little time for the training of the new recruits. "Basic traffic training is a must for a fresher to handle traffic efficiently," said Maxwell Pereira, former joint traffic commissioner. "Generally they (the new hires) undergo a one-month training under chief drill inspectors (CDIs) and also field training under senior or head constables before they are deployed.""But we would still need an additional 1000 men for proper traffic management during the Games," he added.
