Kathmandu, June 21 (PTI) A regional Asian trade body today kicked off a workshop with the aim of helping governments in trade capacity building and integrating trade issues into overall national development strategies. The Enhanced Integrated Framework (EIF) Regional Asia workshop started a programme with the aim of sharing experiences and knowledge about drafting the diagnostic trade integration study among the nations of the region. Vice-chairman of National Planning Commission Jagdish Pokharel inaugurated the three day sub-regional workshop. In the inaugural speech secretary in the Ministry of Commerce and Supplies Purushottam Ojha said the workshop will provide platform to discuss how the EIF process can support the grater aid for trade agenda and trade policy development including the WTO accession and notification in Asian Least Developed Countries. Trade is indeed an important instrument of development, but least developed countries are largely unable to use it in their development process, remarked Madhav Kumar Ghimire, chief secretary of the government of Nepal. While the countries around the world are benefiting from the process of globalisation and regional integration, Asian countries, particularly LDCs are marginalised because of their weak economic status, he pointed out. More than 80 experts and officials from Nepal, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Bhutan, Cambodia, Maldives, Yemen and representatives of various donor agencies are taking part in the workshop.
