Love, Actually

Director Punit Malhotra and actor Imran Khan get mushy over I Hate Luv StorysLove is more than a four-letter world in Bollywood — it is also the perfect formula for a hit. Ask Karan Johar, whose next outing as producer is called I Hate Luv Storys . Not only Johar, first-time director Punit Malhotra has roped in two other Bollywood heavyweights for the film — his uncle and ace fashion designer Manish Malhotra, and the latest candyfloss hearthrob Imran Khan. At Hotel Mount View, where Punit and Khan came together to talk about the July 2 release, we couldn't resist asking: does love really make the film go round? "Of course it does. It works every time," they answer, almost in unison." Usually, a filmmaker's first film is semi-autobiographical. Punit is cynical, just like my character Jay in the film, who is an assistant director, doesn't believe in love and is, ironically, working on the sets of a love story," Khan adds. Khan himself, in a steady relationship with fiancĂ©e Avantika for eight years, is quite the traditionalist when it comes to love. "I'm not a serenading romantic fool but yes, I believe in love and am committed to it," he crosses his heart. "He's whipped for sure," laughs Punit.Punit adds that he always wanted to get into filmmaking. After assisting Johar on his films, he took the script of I Hate Luv Storys to him and got a start up. "I always wanted to make a love story first, and we kept the spelling as 'luv' and 'storys' because we wanted everyone to relate to it. After all, we are the twitter generation," says Punit, adding that his next is an action flick.Interestingly, while Punit wanted to be an actor initially, Imran studied filmmaking and wanted to direct. "I still do, but as of now, I am enjoying this stint as an actor. But I will direct for sure," says Imran, whose next releases are Delhi Belly and Break Ke Baad .We quiz Khan about his boy-next-door image and the name Jai (his name in his debut hit Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na )? "I don't want to be in a stereotype or work with a certain image. Luck and Kidnap didn't do well, but I will do all sorts of films because films are films," he feels. But for now, the lucky element in the film, besides the name Jay, is Avantika's passing shot. "There was one in Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, too," adds Punit. In the meantime, Mills & Boon has released an "I Hate Luv Storys" series with a character similar to Imran's. As for Imran, news is that he's planning to open a home for stray animals and is mulling over the idea of penning a book on Salman Khan. "I want to pen short stories on him for he's the dude. He's the ultimate star whose dialogues send ripples across the country. Fans quote him, rip off seats, whistle at his scenes and tear their clothes off. He is the coolest," he gushes.
