Energy dearth hampering growth of S. Asian economy

Islamabad, June 16 (ANI): Economic growth in South Asia continues to be constrained by severe dearth in energy supply, and this is going to be one of the main challenges facing the region, according to a report on the Human Development in South Asia 2009.The report published by the Mahbub-ul-Haq Human Development Center, Islamabad further says that energy consumption in South Asia is abysmally poor compared to neighbouring regions.Energy use in South Asian countries was 662.6 million oil equivalent tons with per capita energy use between 0. 25 to 1.67 tons of oil equivalent.The report also says that energy scarcity in South Asia is likely to increase over time.Demand for energy in all countries of the region has been projected to increase by a substantial amount in 2015, Xinhua quotes the report, as saying.
