Mumbai, May 10 -- In the third such incident this year, a teenager, who had gone to play cricket with his friends, drowned in the sea at Marve in Malad (West), on Sunday afternoon. The victim has been identified as Roshan Upadhyay (17). He was a resident of Dhanukarwadi in Kandivli (West). The Malvani police said the incident occurred around 4.30 pm. Upadhyay, along with five of his college friends, had gone to play cricket at the beach. "The incident took place when the group was playing cricket near the shore. As the ball fell in the sea, Upadhyay entered the waters to search for it," said inspector Shashikant Surve. While searching for the ball, the victim went deep into the sea and did not realise that he had moved far away from the shore," added Surve. However, Upadhyay got stuck and found it difficult to battle with the rising waves of the high tide. "His friends who assumed he would come back after fetching the ball had no inkling about his situation. When they realised that it was taking too long for Upadhyay to return, they went to look for him but could not trace him," said Surve. Locals, in the mean time, informed the police about the incident."The search operation is hampered due to high tide. We hope to locate the victim as the water recedes," he added.
