Santiago, May 18 (IANS/EFE) Twenty thousand emergency homes have been constructed in Chile to provide shelter to the survivors of the massive earthquake that devastated the country nearly three months ago.'We've already built almost 20,000 emergency homes, within the framework of the Chile Ayuda a Chile (Chile Helping Chile) programme, which fills me with pride,' said Rev. Felipe Berrios, founder of Un Techo para Chile (A Roof for Chile), a non-profit group.'During this week, we will exceed 21,000 units, which fills me with pride since the young volunteers, along with many others, did not stop in their dedication and while some spent time talking and criticising, they didn't stop working. Although the goal has already been attained, while there is a need we will continue working,' he said. The priest said that with the government fund of 15 billion pesos ($28.57 million), the goal has been achieved within 60 days. The magnitude-8.8 earthquake and subsequent tsunami that struck south-central Chile Feb 27 left nearly 500 people dead, 800,000 injured or displaced and incurred damage worth an estimated $30 billion.
