New Delhi, May 4 (PTI) As many as 39 pilots or co-pilots were found alco-positive during the pre-flight breath-analyzer test last year, Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel told the Rajya Sabha today. "39 cases have been reported to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) from January 2009 to December 2009, where pilots or co-pilots were found to have consumed alcohol during pre-flight breath-analyzer test," Patel said in a written reply. He said action was taken against them as per the Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR), section 5, series F, Part 3, which says that any crew member found alco-positive during pre-flight breath-analyzer test should be kept off flying duty for at least four weeks. And the employer company initiates disciplinary proceedings against him. Pilots are supposed not to consume alcohol about 12 hours prior to their flights. Patel also informed the House that last year there were 15 incidents of air proximity in the country, which was almost half of those which happened in 2008. In 2008, there were 28 cases, while 27 were reported in 2007. The Civil Aviation Minister, while replying to another question said Air India had spent Rs 1683.46 lakhs for its 13 overseas offices, where the national carrier does not flies. He said commercial viability of all such offices was in the process of review and appropriate action was being taken to close all offices in cities where alternative arrangements could be made to ensure revenue generation.
