New Delhi, May 17 -- Monday was a scorcher for the Capital with the temperature touching a season high of 45.4 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature was four degrees above normal for this month, making it the hottest May 17 in eight years. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) does not predict any respite in the coming days. "The temperature will hover round 44 degrees for a couple of days," said B P Yadav, director, Weather Forecast, IMD. The humidity, between 15 per cent and 59 per cent, made the day more uncomfortable. "The heat made it almost impossible for me to write my examination. The temperature seems to rise continuously," said Ishnita Keskar, 22, a student at Jamia Millia Islamia. The city had recorded a temperature of 44.4 degrees Celsius on Thursday, the highest for that date in five years. "It was difficult for me to attend the Delhi University open session today. It's like a furnace," said Karan Dogra, 18. The weatherman has predicted a partly cloudy sky for tomorrow. Yadav attributed the high temperature to Western Disturbances over the Himalayan region. "The Western disturbances are bringing hot air to the plains," he said.The all-time record for the month was on May 29, 1944, when the mercury touched 47.2 degrees.
