Mumbai, June 17 -- The monsoon has officially arrived in Maharashtra, with all 33 districts experiencing rainfall over the past few days. Forty-six people have died across the state, including 10 in the capital, in rain-related incidents, said Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal. Bhujbal, who held a review meeting with Revenue Minister Narayan Rane, announced a compensation of Rs 1 lakh for the dead. The Met department, he said, has predicted heavy showers in the Konkan region, including Mumbai and central Maharashtra. In Mumbai, the season's first heavy shower claimed 10 lives. Eight persons, including six women, died when a boundary wall collapsed early on Wednesday in Vartaknagar area of Thane. Municipal Commissioner RA Rajeev said an enquiry had been ordered into the incident. Bhujbal said rainfall recorded in the city has been 50 times more than last year. "In Mumbai last year, rainfall recorded so far was around 4-5 mm, this year we have recorded 265 mm so far. The catchment areas of the dams supplying water to Mumbai as well as others also have noted good rainfall."Lakhs of Mumbaiites suffered as local train services on Western, Central and Harbour lines were running late.
