Although pursuing a private job, Singh wants to be a fireman. The tough physical fitness tests do not seem to be a deterrent. He is not alone. The lure of the government job seems to be such that there were around 14,000 candidates who applied for the posts of firemen and drivers, when they were advertised by the Fire and Emergency Services Wing of the Municipal Corporation. For 47 vacancies of firemen, 9,000 candidates have been shortlisted. The physical fitness test of the candidates is being held at Police Lines, Sector 26. Everyday, around 800 candidates are called for the test. Only around 50 per cent of the candidates manage to clear the test, which includes running 100 yards with a weight of 60 kg in one minute. The second stage involves climbing a rope to a height of eight to 10 feet from the ground and the final is lifting a hook ladder to a vertical position. Candidates are eliminated after every task.Station Fire Officer M L Sharma says, "Physical fitness test will conclude this week. It has been a long process, considering the large number of candidates who applied. Almost half of the candidates will be eliminated by the end of the test. For those who qualify, a written test is scheduled for May 23. The posts have been advertised after many years. The youths still seem to prefer government jobs."The whole recruitment process is being videographed, so that candidates do not cry foul in case they are not selected. Most candidates are from Punjab and Haryana. Others from UP, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh have also applied. While the minimum qualification to apply is Class X, most candidates are graduates.Another candidate, Lucky, says he was attracted to the fire services and when the posts were advertised, it gave him an opportunity to pursue his dream. "I have cleared one part of the test and hope to sail through the remaining to finally get selected," he adds.
