The African Nations Cup finals will be held in every odd year starting from 2013, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) said in a statement on Sunday. It means there will be two tournaments in successive years with Equatorial Guinea and Gabon co-hosting the next one in 2012 and Libya holding the 2013 event."The Libyan football association has accepted hosting the tournament in 2013 in order to allow CAF to organise the tournament in odd years," the statement said.CAF president Issa Hayatou said in January that he did not want the Nations Cup to be played in the same year as the World Cup finals.CAF made no reference to a possible change in the timing of the tournament from the start of the year to June and July. The Nations Cup falls in the middle of the European season and has been a contentious issue for years with many leading clubs having to release their top African players.CAF said bidding for the 2015 and 2017 finals would begin soon.(Editing by Ed Osmond; to query or comment on this story email sportsfeedback@thomsonreuters.com)
