Air India carries more passengers in April, May 2010

Mumbai, May 16 (IANS) National carrier Air India notched a 19.7 percent increase in passenger traffic last month and a similar trend continued during the first half of May as compared to the like period last year, an official said here Sunday.In the first half of May, AI recorded a 16.7 percent growth in the daily average passenger carriage as compared to May last year. This was despite a turbulent period in the past few weeks when air traffic operations around the world were hit due to the Iceland volcano cloud.During April, the average daily passenger carriage was 44,000 on Air India flights as compared to 36,750 in April 2009.In the first half of May, the average daily passenger carriage on Air India Express international network and the domestic sectors operated by the IC-coded flights was 45,900 as compared to 39,350 in May 2009.While the domestic market witnessed a growth of 22 percent between January-April 2010, the AI domestic traffic grew by 26 percent.With the upswing in passenger carriage last month, AI's domestic market share rose to 18.2 percent, bringing it on par with other full service carriers in the same segment.AI also has reasons to smile on another front -- lowest passenger complaints.On the basis of the monthly data compiled by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), AI had the lowest incidence of passenger complaints -- 0.6 per 10,000 passengers.The industry average on this count stood at 3.5 per 10,000 passengers, making AI a passenger-friendly airline.Besides this, AI had fewer cancellations of flight at only 1.9 percent, compared to the industry average of 2.5 percent in April.
