Antony urged Digvijay to make amends, meet PC

Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh's call on Home Minister P Chidambaram on Friday after he attacked the latter in public over anti-Maoists operations was part of the final act, choreographed by Defence Minister A K Antony, to help the two leaders reconcile their differences and bury the hatchet.Government sources told The Sunday Express that after Singh publicly called Chidambaram "intellectually arrogant and rigid", an angry Congress high command asked Antony to speak to the former Madhya Pradesh chief minister and ask him to not only openly express regrets about his newspaper article on April 14 but also clarify his position on the Maoist issue personally with Chidambaram. It was made clear to the party general secretary that besides Chidambaram, the Congress high command and the government had taken a dim view of his public assertions. It is understood that Singh tried to wriggle out of the sticky situation by saying that he and Chidambaram were good friends but this did not cut ice with Antony. With both the party and the government upset, a section of the party felt that Singh could be sent back to Madhya Pradesh to revive the Congress fortunes now that MPCC president Suresh Pachauri was on his way back to Parliament. While Singh openly expressed regret over causing embarrassment to the party and the government by what he called an "ill-timed" article on April 30, he stopped short of apologising to Chidambaram even though he maintained that the Home Minister was a friend. However, with Chidambaram upset at the friendly fire from his own party, Singh was forced to meet him to finally put a lid on the issue. But, according to top sources, Singh did not personally express regrets to Chidambaram on Friday. Instead, he repeated his March 2010 demand for speedy trial of terror cases involving the youth from Azamgarh with a new suggestion for the Home Minister to seriously look into "Hindu militancy". In his last meeting with Chidamabaram, Singh wanted all the cases involving Azamgarh youth to be dealt by a special court in Delhi. While the internal security establishment is seriously looking into ultra-right militancy, the Home Ministry is in no position to club all the cases against the Azamgarh accused as they have been charge-sheeted by different state polices in separate cases. The only assurance that has been given to Singh is that the Home Ministry will personally monitor these cases for speedy justice.
