Arrested for graft, banker attempts suicide in custody

A senior bank official, who had been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation on corruption charges, attempted suicide while in custody.According to the police, the accused, Gopal Krishnan, attempted suicide at the CBI office in CGO complex, Lodhi Colony, on Friday at 6 am.Krishnan, 52, was posted as the deputy manager at the Chandni Chowk branch of the State Bank of India. He was picked up by the Anti-Corruption Branch of theCBI on Thursday for allegedly demanding bribe of Rs 20,000 from a customer for facilitating a bank loan, the police said."He was alone in the duty room on the first floor of the complex. Krishnan broke a glass and used a shard to slash his left wrist. The CBI officials rushed Krishnan to the Safdarjung Hospital. He was admitted to the ICU and discharged on Saturday afternoon," a senior police officer said.The CBI reported the matter to the police on Friday evening. In the its complaint, the CBI noted that Krishnan was "in their custody for a trap case".The South Delhi police arrested and booked Krishnan for attempting suicide under Section 309 of the IPC on the basis of his medical report and the complaint forwarded by the CBI.Krishnan, a resident of Sector-13 in Rohini, was produced in a city court on Saturday.
