The Maharashtra government is planning to set up nursing homes in select government medical colleges to promote health tourism.Medical Education Minister Dr Vijaykumar Gavit told The Indian Express that they would come up on the premises of government medical colleges through state funding or public private partnership (PPP). Medical college teachers would man them.Gavit said the nursing homes would come up in Mumbai and cities like Pune, Nagpur and Aurangabad. They would be replicated elsewhere depending on the response. The state has 14 medical colleges."We aim to attract local and foreign patients. Some countries lack proper medical facilities or these amenities are costly there. We will examine if an understanding could be reached with such countries... to attract people for treatment. If this is a success, it will help in earning revenue and generating employment," said Gavit, adding that as compared to low fee charged in government hospitals, these nursing homes would be run on a commercial basis and offer services on a par with private hospitals."Our services will be better than those offered by them but at a lower rate," said Gavit. The medical college teachers too would get additional income for practising in these nursing homes. Gavit said they would ensure these doctors did not ignore their patients in the government hospitals."This will not affect their regular duty," he claimed, adding that the nursing homes would have a maximum of 100 and a minimum of 50 beds. Gavit added the functions of staff like nurses, ward boys and housekeeping would be outsourced.Gavit also admitted that some doctors availing of non-practising allowance (NPA) continued to do private practice and added they were planning to do away with the NPA. Gavit said they would meet managements of private hospitals to promote health tourism. However, the proposal has come under fire from some opposition parties. Shiv Sena MLC Dr Deepak Sawant said while the state government was planning to promote medical tourism, the government medical colleges were in a bad shape. He said a number of state-run medical colleges lacked adequate staff and equipment. "I feel the government should not get into this business," he said.
