At PAU, hiked salaries lead to loss of HRA for teachers

Teachers at the Punjab Agricultural University, who are still celebrating revised salaries, are also busy planning how to invest their arrears and handle hiked salaries. Amid all this, teachers residing inside the PAU campus are facing a piquant situation. With hiked salaries, the house rent allowance paid to these employees has also gone up tremendously. HRA constitutes nearly 25 per cent of the basic salary. The employees staying on campus will have to forgo their HRA in lieu of homes, which before the revision was around Rs 4,000 to Rs 5,000, has now jumped to Rs 15,000.The situation is worse for couples employed within the university and living on campus. Both the husband and wife will have to forgo their HRAs, which at times equals Rs 30,000.Thus, teachers staying on campus are mulling over ideas to shift out. A teacher, wishing anonymity, said, "Paying Rs 4,000 for university accommodation was fine. But Rs 15,000 pinches many. One can get a good place to stay in posh colonies like Sarabha Nagar and Gurdev Nagar for Rs 10,000. For couples, it is even tougher. One can actually own a home by paying Rs 30,000 per month as installments."It has also come to light that nearly 75 teachers are buying houses in an upcoming colony near South City from a private realtor. Dr Mukesh Siag from College of Agricultural Engineering PAU, who is also a part of the deal, said, "Whenever there is pay revision, teachers have to invest some money. Moreover, everyone needs a home and thus we planned to strike a deal together. It is still in its initial stages."When asked whether HRA, too, could be a reason, Dr Siag said, "For some it might be. But then, as I said, owing a home is a basic need."
