Mumbai, May 9 -- A Congress corporator from the Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation was assaulted with a chopper and shot dead on Saturday by two unidentified assailants. Police suspect a property dispute could be the motive. Praful Patil was a sitting corporator and former Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation mayor. Police said it happened at 8.15 am, when Patil was jogging inside the premises of Abhinav Shetkari Shikshan Mandal, an educational institute where he was a trustee. Witnesses said a few minutes before the attack, Patil was seen inspecting an under-construction portion of the complex. They said the two assailants entered the complex and pumped bullets into the victim. Police have said Patil was shot in the back with a 9 mm revolver. Two bullets were fired, one missed. The accused escaped before anyone saw them closely enough to give police a description. Locals who gathered soon after the incident rushed him to Tunga hospital at Bhayander, where he was declared dead before admission. Ganesh Raut, a witness, said: "The two men fired and fled from the junior college side of the complex. We tried to follow them, but by then they (accused) had disappeared." Police said since Patil is also a builder, he has had property disputes with numerous individuals, and had lodged a complaint about it with Navghar police station in Bhayander. Deputy Superintendent of Police, Nitin Sampatwad said: "Although we are investigating all angles, the property angle is a prominent one.""He was very fitness conscious and regularly went jogging," said a neighbour.
