New Delhi, June 20 -- On a day the Congress came under renewed attack on the Bhopal tragedy, the government inched closer to filing a curative petition against the dilution of criminal charges against former Union Carbide officials and moving a fresh plea to the US to extradite its former chairman Warren Anderson to stand trial in India. The Group of Ministers on Bhopal, which met twice on Saturday, reportedly agreed with Attorney General GE Vahanvati's view that a curative petition should be filed against the 1996 Supreme Court verdict diluting the charges. Saturday also saw the BJP tear into the Congress on the strength of former Madhya Pradesh CM Arjun Singh's disclosure that he'd had on "locus standi" on Anderson's release."The Congress should apologise. It is patently clear safe passage was given to Anderson by the then Congress-led central government," the BJP's Ravi Shankar Prasad said.
