Mumbai, May 5 -- The civic body, in order to create alternative sources of water to help tide over the water crisis, will be digging ringwells across the city. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will now be digging ringwells in addition to the civic body's ongoing work of digging new borewells and cleaning the existing ones. The civic body has now appointed three contractors-for the eastern suburbs, western suburbs and the city-to construct new ringwells. The civic body has made a provision of Rs 41 crore for the construction and cleaning of the ringwells. "These ringwells will be dug before the monsoons. They will help reduce the dependence on drinking water for non-potable purpose," said Vinay Deshpande, chief hydraulic engineer. Deshpande also said that most of these wells will be dug in public places where water from the ringwells can be used by the public. The BMC's standing committee members said, ringwells should be encouraged instead of borewells because the saline water doesn't get mixed with the fresh water, as is the case with borewells. The administration had also said that the contractors will not be paid if saline water is found in the ringwell. Meanwhile, some even protested the administration granting the contractor Rs 3.69 lakh for a ringwell.Reacting to these suggestions, additional municipal commissioner Anil Diggikar said, "If contractors rampantly dig ringwells, without a proper study, the city's ground water-table will be in danger of getting exhausted."
