Boy dies after falling into borewell

Beed (Maha), May 4 (PTI) A two-year-old boy, who fell into a 50 feet deep borewell near here in Central Maharashtra, died today, police said. Rescuers pulled out Santosh Mhaske''s body, 20 hours after the incident. Mhaske fell into the borewell yesterday afternoon while playing in a field near Antarwali village, about 40 km from here, Assistant Police Inspector A S Jagtap said. When district administration came to know about the incident, rescue efforts were launched to save the child. "All efforts were made to keep the boy alive. Oxygen was pumped into the borewell to increase chances of his survival. Rescue work went on the whole night," he said. "The land around the borewell was dug up several times in a bid to reach to the boy. But each time the earth around the pit caved in. So, we sought the Army''s help." As soon as the boy''s body was brought out, doctors at the site declared him dead, the police officer said. Mhaske''s father is a daily wage-worker.
