Soon you can treat yourself with peach brought all the way from California. A delegation from California Canning Peaches Association (CCAP), currently touring India , is looking for potential traders, importers and retail chain owner to process their canned and bottled peaches in the Indian market."The purpose of the visit is to explore opportunities available in the Indian market for peach. It was because of peach farmers of Indian origin in California that we were motivated to explore the Indian market," said an enthusiastic Rich Hudgins, president, CCPA, the oldest agri cooperative of California.The organisation is owned by nearly 500 peach growers, of which 30-40% are of Indian origin.California contributes 25% to the world's peach production and almost entirely to US' canned peach supply."These farmers made trips back to India over the years and talked about the growth of the Indian economy, which has changed a lot in the last 5-10 years, as have the people here. Changing lifestyles and growth in the retail market have resulted in a huge demand for processed food, including fruits. We are very interested in developing new export markets in India," added Hudgins."We are here to build long-term relationships with customers and are not setting any targets. We will be talking to importers and retailers during our visit in order to establish bigger market for canned peaches," he said.Traders are also upbeat about CCPA's plans. "We did an initial survey on peaches. The Indian taste is very familiar with peaches, just that our quantity of production is small. Now we, especially people in north India, get to taste peach 3-4 weeks in a year. But after this, we will be able to gauge on peaches throughout the year. A peach start, peach cake or a peach ice tea is a very easy addition to a menu, especially since it is healthy, juicy and not very expensive," said Sumit Saran of Gurgaon-based SCS Agribusiness Consultants.In India, states like Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir produce peach. Himachal Pradesh produces the best quality of peach in the country.
