Chawla-Sawhney still at loggerheads

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

The CPS cries ill will, minister says a routine affairAs if the ongoing bickering among its leaders to finalise party's state executive was not enough, ruling partner Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) is busy fighting at another front. Two of its top government functionaries, Health Minister Laxami Kanta Chawla and Chief Parliamentary Secretary (CPS) Jagdish Raj Sawhney, an MLA from Batala, are at loggerheads following raids conducted on diagnostic centres, owned by Sawhney's family members here. The raids, which Chawla says were a "routine affair", aimed to implement the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PNDT) Act, led to the sealing of the diagnostic centres and hospitals owned by Sawhney's son-in-law. This left the CPS fuming and he lost no time in attacking Chawla for "settling old score" and nursing a grudge against him and his family. "Why no other centre in the city was raided. The team of health officials, especially deputed from Chandigarh, targeted my relatives and family members. There is a clear ill will and hostility against me," said Sawhney. He said he had taken up the matter with senior party leaders and even Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal. On the other hand, Chawla said she was dutiful to implement the PNDT Act and officials conducted raids without any malice towards anyone."In routine raids are conducted wherever complaints are received. Sometimes I am not even aware where raids are being conducted. We should clean our houses before targeting others," said a buoyant Chawla.Follower of RSS ideology, Chawla is often accused of stubbornness and communal leaning and has been an embarrassment to her own government. She was recently the target of Akalis and Quadian MLA Lakhbir Singh Lodhinangal asked her to resign if she was not ready to listen to their grievances.Sources in the office of the Director, Health and Family Welfares, said the officials were in quandary over the unsavory war of words between the minister and the C PS. "The law is taking its course and the material and records seized are being examined for further action against the culprits in this case," stated an officer, requesting anonymity. The three hospitals where inspections were carried and records seized included Public Hospital, Panjgrain, owned by Dr Pyara Lal, who is father of Sawhney's son-in-law, Chaudhary Diagnostic Centre, owned by Dr Ajay Choudhary, a close confidant of Sawhney and Rajindra Hospital, where Sawhney's son-in-law Dr Gautam Sharma performs ultra-sonography. The raiding teams had found various flaws in the conduct of the tests for aborting pregnancies, which amounts to sex determination tests. "If found guilty severe action is awaited against the hospitals and centres," said the officials, irked over the politicisation of the inspections. Congress leaders including former CPS Ashwani Shekhri, former MLAs Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Tripat Rajinder Singh Bajwa have demanded a fair investigations into the case and action taken against the erring hospitals.
