China April car sales growth slows from March

China's passenger car sales in April rose 33.2 percent from a year earlier, slowing from March when sales gained from a lower base of comparison but analysts said demand remained solid despite the moderating trend.A total of 1.11 million sedans, vans and sport utility vehicles were sold last month, compared with 1.26 million units moved in March and 831,000 units sold in April, 2009, the official China Association of Automobile Manufacturers said.Break-neck expansion in the world's biggest auto market is set to slow from the current quarter given a high base of comparison from extraordinarily strong sales in 2009, propelled by government incentives to boost consumption along with a near $600 billion economic stimulus plan."Slower growth is inevitable as it's impossible for automakers to replicate the 70 percent-plus monthly growth seen in the latter part of 2009. But the April figure is still pretty solid and much better than many had anticipated," said Sheng Ye, associate research director at industry consultancy Ipsos' Greater China region.China has been a major bright spot for global automakers amid a sharp industry downturn, thanks to Beijing's stimulus measures that included aggressive cuts in sales tax on small cars.(Reporting by Fang Yan and Jacqueline Wong)
