CII chief favours labour reforms, but no hire-and-fire policy

Hari S Bhartia, the new president of the apex industry body Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), has decided to focus on labour reforms, but without diluting the social security cover."While labour reforms are certainly important for the industry, the focus is also on providing security. The industry is not asking for a hire-and-fire policy. We do not want that any of the security cover that has been extended to the labour to get diluted," Bhartia told The Indian Express. After getting elected as the CII head, Bhartia has met key policymakers and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. He has floatedthe idea that new labour policies could first be tested in manufacturing zones.Topmost on his agenda, Bhartia said, was to provide the crucial link between education and employability by training the youth in industry-specific skills. "At CII, we will focus on creating employability by encouraging self-employment and entrepreneurship. In fact, the industry will work towards taking vocational training to the school level," said Bhartia. The requisite infrastructure for providing the training was already present in the country, he said. The new president expressed his dismay over rising food inflation, which has adversely impacted the monetary policy as the interest rates are hardening. "Even though agriculture growth has declined by 0.02 per cent, the food inflation has risen sharply. Clearly, it means that the supply side needs better management," he said.Another concern for the industry is the huge fluctuation in the currency rate, weakening the Indian ruppee. "It requires government intervention as the fluctuation is likely to have an adverse impact on both exporters and the local industry," he added.
