New Delhi, June 16 -- Beginning Thursday, an autorickshaw ride may just turn costlier. Indraprastha Gas Limited, the company that supplies CNG in Delhi, Ghaziabad and Noida, has substantially increased the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) prices in Delhi and the National Capital Region by Rs 5.60 per kilogram from Wednesday midnight. Though the government is likely to revise auto fares in the next few days, the autorickshaw drivers may take the CNG hike as an excuse to overcharge passengers. "CNG ka daam badh gaya to humein kiraya bhi badhana padega. (CNG prices have increased, we will have to increase our fare too)," said Dharam Singh, who has been driving an autorickshaw in Delhi for eight years. "The government is expected to revise auto fare soon and we will wait till then," said Sobhran Singh Rajput, president, Bhartiya Tipahiya Chalak Sangh. Auto drivers have threatened to go on strike if the government does not hike fares soon. Delhi transport minister Arvinder Singh Lovely said his department has just concluded a study on revision of auto and taxi fare. "We will examine all facts and the state Cabinet will take final decision in this regard soon," Lovely said. Autorickshaws in Delhi charge Rs 10 for the first kilometre and Rs 4.50 per kilometre after that; taxis charge Rs 15 for the first kilometre and Rs 8.50 for each kilometre travelled thereafter.
