Praful Patil, a Congress corporator of the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) was shot dead by unknown assailants on Saturday morning during his morning walk at an educational complex in Bhayander (East). The Navghar police investigating the murder have not detained anyone or made any arrests.However, they claim a property dispute could be the motive.Patil, the former mayor of the MBMC was taking his daily morning walk at around 8:15 AM on the grounds of the Abhinav Shetkari Shikshan Mandal, an educational complex where Patil is a trustee. He is also a builder and petrol pump owner.Patil had inspected an under-construction building in the educational complex a few minutes before he was shot, said police."Patil was shot once in the back before they made the atackers fled on foot. Locals rushed Patil to the Tunga Hospital in Bhayander. He was declared dead before admission," said Senior Police Inspector Rajendra Mohite of the Navghar police station.The police have recovered a spent cartridge from the spot and are searching for another as they believe two shots might have been fired although only one hit Patil.Deputy Superintendent of Police (Mira Bhayander division) Nitin Sambatwad said, "The two unknown persons entered the complex and shot Patil with a 9-mm pistol. We cannot rule out a fallout in property dispute, as Patil was also a builder. We have registered a case of murder under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code against the unknown persons and are conducting enquiries in thematter."Ganesh Raut, a watchman of the premises said in his statement that some local youths had seen the two persons near the Junior College complex nearby after the shooting.According to police sources, Patil had registered complaints with the Navghar police station in the past over a disputed property issue and the murder could be a fallout of that.Patil was the president of the Mira-Bhayander Municipal Council in 1997 and was serving his fourth term as corporator.Patil was one of the most active corporators of the Mira-Bhayander civic body.Dinesh Nalawade, chairman of the civic body standing committee, said that there was no known enemy of Patil.Patil is survived by three daughters.
