Giving in to pressure from khap panchayats which have been backing honour killings, Kurukshetra Congress MP Naveen Jindal on Monday assured khap representatives that he would raise their demand for a change in the Hindu Marriage Act to disallow marriages within the same gotra. While the Congress dissociated itself from the remarks of its MP saying "no customary law, tradition, practice can possibly be excused or condoned in any manner if it involves violation of the law of the land or approves killing of any kind", INLD chief Om Prakash Chautala backed Jindal and met Union home minister P Chidambaram to press for a change in law to ban marriages within the same gotra.Khap panchayats are demanding that Section 5 of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 be amended to prohibit marriages within the same gotra, same village and its surrounding areas. In Kaithal in Haryana, Jindal showed up at the HUDA rally site and told khap representatives, who had gathered under the banner of Sarv Jati Sarv Khap, that he would raise their demand at a suitable forum. His visit to the rally site assumed political significance given the elections this month to municipal councils in Haryana.Asked about Jindal's support to the khap panchayats, AICC spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi said: "In democracies, individuals and MPs can have their opinions. But that does not mean any change in the Congress approach on this subject. The Congress stand is that no customary law, tradition, practice can possibly be excused or condoned in any manner if it involves violation of the law of the land or approves killing of any kind, be it in the name of custom, tradition or honour. If any custom encourages violent methods or supports it in the name of honour, we oppose it."On the other hand, Chautala backed Jindal. "We are opposed to the same gotra marriage. The INLD was the first to support it (the khap demand) as it is not right scientifically and medically. If Jindal or anyone else supports it, I am thankful to him," he told reporters.
