Double delight for Malaysia in Asian squash

Chennai, May 4 (IANS) Malaysia celebrated a fine double as Mohd Azlan Iskandar and Nicol David retained the men's and women's titles, respectively, in the Asian squash championships here Tuesday. In the process, top seed and World No.1 Nicol won her seventh Asian crown after defeating Rebecca Chiu of Hong Kong 11-6, 11-7, 11-7 in just 24 minutes. The men's final turned out to be an anti-climax when Iskandar's opponent Amir Atlas Khan of Pakistan conceded the match due to cramps with the Malaysian leading 11-8, 11-4, 3-0.Khan later said he has been suffering from the pain for over six months and would consult a doctor in Germany to sort out the problem. The spotlight Tuesday was trained on Nicol and she did not disappoint her fans. She was a class apart against Chiu to whom she has lost just once in 23 meetings. It was as flawless an exhibition of top drawer squash as one could get to see.'My family has been supporting me ever since I took to the game and I dedicate this title to them. Chiu is also strong and experienced and I never wanted to give her enough room to manoeuvre,' said Nicol. The only time when Chiu looked to be on pace with her opponent was in the third game when she led 3-0, but once Nicol got into her stride, it was virtually a one-way street with the Malaysian doing as she pleased. The team championships commence Wednesday.
