Emission norms no roadblock, auto sales up 25% in April

New Delhi, May 10 -- The confusion over the implementation of stricter emission norms in 13 big cities failed to dampen growth in automobile sales. The industry got off to a flying start in April with a 25.2 per cent jump in sales at 11.20 lakh units. Car sales grew 39.5 per cent to 1.43 lakh units with Tata Motors leading the charge followed by Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai Motor Ltd. Tata's sales grew 59 per cent to 26,074 units. Two-wheeler sales grew 22 per cent to 8.6 lakh units on the back of a 16.7 per cent growth in motorcycle sales and 52.6 per cent in scooter sales. Commercial vehicle sales also grew 64.5 per cent to 49,086 units.A total of 37,479 cars were exported in April as against 29,307 in the corresponding month last year. During the month, overall vehicle export across all categories increased by 87.6 per cent to 2,01,543 units as against 1,07,424 units in the same month last year.
