Ford India keen on making products with high local content

Chennai, June 17 (PTI) Carmaker Ford India is keen on making its products with high local content, a top company official said here today. The wholly-owned subsidiary of the US car major Ford currently manufactures hatchback Figo, midsize sedan Ikon, premium sedan Fiesta and premium SUV Endeavour at its manufacturing facility at Maraimalai Nagar. The plant has a capacity of two lakh units. "The recently introduced Ford Figo has a high localisation level of about 85 per cent and that is why we are here," Ford Motor India Managing Director Michael Boneham said after inaugurating the ninth edition of the international machine tools and auto component manufacturing exhibition ACMEE 2010 at the Chennai Trade Centre. Besides Figo, Ikon and Fiesta have over 90 per cent and 85 per cent localisation level of components, respectively. Referring to the shipment of petrol engines to Thailand, Boneham said, "The engines we are exporting have 65 per cent localisation level and that demonstrates the potential of manufacturing sector in India". About 1,000 petrol engines with a capacity of 1.4 litre and 1.6 litre high-compression were exported to AutoAlliance Thailand, the sister facility of Ford Motor India. Over 400 participants are showcasing their products in the five day industrial exhibition, which was inaugurated today by Boneham. It also includes 70 overseas participants including those from the US, UK, Japan and Korea.
