Google to shut Nexus One web store

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

New York, May 16 (PTI) Internet search engine giant Google said it will not sell its Nexus One smartphone through its web store and would rather rely on retail outlets. In a post on Google''s official blog, the company said the web store, which opened in January, had not matched expectations. "While the global adoption of the Android platform has exceeded our expectations, the web store has not," Google Vice-President Engineering Andy Rubin said in the post. The company said it plans to stop the sale of Nexus One through its web store as it increases the availability of the handset in retail channels. In addition, Google said it would change the focus of its Nexus One store from selling to showcasing a variety of Android phones available globally. "Once we have increased the availability of Nexus One devices in stores, we''ll stop selling handsets via the web store and will instead use it as an online store window to showcase a variety of Android phones available globally," Rubin said. Google further said, "We believe that the changes we''re announcing today will help get more phones to more people quicker, which is good for the entire Android ecosystem - users, partners and also Google." The Nexus One, a slim, touchscreen phone, was made in partnership with Taiwan''s HTC and runs on Google''s Android operating system. The handset uses Google''s Android 2.1 version firmware, features a touch-screen display, weighs around 130 grams and is 11.5-mm-thick. The phone comes with a voice-recognition technology that allow users to compose e-mails by speaking.
