Shimoga, May 10 (PTI) A court today extended till May 24 the judicial custody of former Karnataka Minister H Halappa, arrested on charge of rape. Passing orders on a petition by CID police, Judicial Magistrate Ravikant extended by 14 days the remand of Halappa, who was, however, not produced before the court as he remained in hospital a day after his arrest. Halappa was remanded in a day''s judicial custody yesterday after his arrest by CID, which is probing the case, but later hospitalised when he complained of chest pain. Jail sources said the former food and civil supplies minister could not be produced in the court as he was "not in a fit condition". Halappa would file a bail application tomorrow in the high court, his counsel Ashok Bhat said. His arrest came on a complaint by Chandravathi, wife of financier and his friend Venkatesh Murthy, alleging that he had raped her. Halappa, who resigned last week as minister after a Kannada daily published a report claiming he had raped the woman last November, has denied the charge, terming it as a "political conspiracy" by his adversaries. Halappa, hailing from Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa''s home district Shimoga, is also facing charges of criminal intimidation, wrongful confinement and restraint.
