Hosts wary of Iran threat

Indian coach says West Asian team is the favourite at freestyle wrestling meetNo Ramesh Kumar, no problem, said India's freestyle wrestling chief coach Jagminder Singh. Ramesh (74kg) and Anuj Kumar (84kg) were the only medal winners from the freestyle team at the Asian Senior freestyle meet that was held in Pattaya, Thailand in May 2009.But a layoff due to an elbow injury meant that the wrestler, who also won a bronze medal at the world championships last year, will miss the 2010 edition of the continental event. But a confident Jagminder on Monday said that Ramesh's replacement Narsingh Yadav was equally good in the category."Narsingh is a good talent too. He beat the Beijing bronze-medalist from Belarus to win the silver medal in the Alexander Medvedev tournament last month," the coach told the Indian Express.Jagminder, who is busy getting through the accreditation and other formalities for the team, added Iran were the overwhelming favourites at the tournament beginning on Wednesday."Historically, Iran have been winning most of the medals at the Asian meets. And also they have sent their best team for this tournament. Looking at these things, I would say they have a better team than ours."But this doesn't mean we don't have good wrestlers in the squad. Iran is good, but we have a better side compared to all other countries, who are participating here. We'll be fighting for many medals in the tournament," he said.In the same sentence he lowered his expectations, saying the draw will play an important role too. "It's too early to say how many medals we will fetch at the meet. Much will depend on the draw that we will get."Apart from Iran, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, China and Mongolia have confirmed entries.'We'll win medals too'Interestingly, team's assistant coach, GS Sangha, was more confident than Jagminder."Don't rule out our team this early. We'll win many medals here. I am saying this purely based on the fact that all our boys are fit and had been training real hard and raring to go, Sangha said.Even as much of the teams — though in batches — have arrived in the Capital, the Indian team decided to stay on in Sonepat for the day, as they were busy preparing for the weigh-ins, that'll happen on Tuesday and as well on Wednesday."There was no rush to get the team and as we've a set structure there so they are still in Sonepat getting ready for the weigh-ins, besides training too. They'll be here by tonight though," Singh added.FreeStyle team: Rahul Aware (55kg), Rahul Mann (60kg), Sushil Kumar (66kg), Narsingh Yadav (74kg), Anuj Kumar (84kg), Mausam Khatri (96kg) and Rajiv Tomar (120kg)
