Kannur, Jun 16 (PTI) Police today recovered a huge cache of kitchen knives, iron rods and other electronic gadgets, illegally kept inside Kannur Central jail, barely two days after two hardcore criminals escaped the high security prison. "The goods including 50 knives, unspecified quantity of iron and wooden rods, six mobile phones, 27 mobile chargers, drugs, contraceptives, sleeping pills, Rs 3,519 in cash, food items and parts of pressure cookers were found concealed in five blocks where inmates are locked up," ADGP (Prisons) Alexander Jacob told reporters here. "The five-hour long raid began at 1400 hours and was carried out jointly by around 140 personnel from police and jail departments and as per the instruction of Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan," Jacob said. The recovery of illegal goods made it clear there had been serious security lapses in the high security prison, which was overcrowded with 1,200 inmates, he said. Jacob said inmates also used to cook delicacies of their choice "maybe with or without knowledge of prison officials." He admitted there had been contradictions of versions given by jail officials and police about the modus operandi of the two criminals who escaped on Monday last. Jacob said that Jayanand one of the criminals nabbed by police at the tourist resort of Udagamandalam in Tamil Nadu, was brought here later today and would be shifted to Viyyur Central jail in Thrissur. Jayanand, convicted in several criminal cases, including murder and Riyas (26), a remand prisoner facing several burglary cases, escaped on June 14 by cutting open iron grills of the cell window and scaling the prison walls. The incident is seen as a serious security lapse as terror suspect T Nazir, a prime accused in the 2008 Bangalore bomb blasts case, was lodged in the prison recently. The state government has already suspended a deputy jailor and four wardens of the prison after the incident.
