New Delhi, May 4 (PTI) Taking forward their cooperation to tackle global warming, India and China have begun initiating bilateral cooperation in the forestry sector to create a large carbon sink that would help absorb greenhouse gases. To begin with, a five-member team visited the neighbouring country in April to discuss promoting cooperation in the forestry management and environment control to tackle pollution. The six day visit came following a meeting between Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh and Vice Premier of China, Hui Liangyu, besides numerous business delegation from both the countries in March. "Both countries have large forest cover and very aggressive afforestation targets. I am glad that this exchange has begun to take shape. It bodes well for India-China bilateral relations. Based on the deliberations, the Chinese government is expected to confirm these actions, and follow up activities will begin thereafter," a statement from the minister said. Underlining the need for cooperation with China in the field of forestry, Ramesh had said in March that the neighbouring country has done remarkably well in the area, where it has set a target of bringing 40 million hectares of land under green cover in the next ten years with four million hectares each every year. "So, what we have done in the last ten years -- bringing four million hectares of land under green cover-- China plans to do it within one year," the Minister had said. The visit of the Indian delegation, led by P B Bandopadhyay, Additional Director General of Forests, commenced with a courtesy meeting with the Vice Administrator of State Forestry Administration of China, Yin Hong.
