Mumbai, May 8 (IANS) Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal Saturday said that the state government has decided to impose entertainment duty (ED) on the Indian Premier League cricket matches from next year.Bhujbal, a confidant of NCP chief Sharad Pawar, told mediapersons this afternoon that a decision over the issue was taken by the cabinet last month.'However, the minutes of the cabinet meeting were confirmed two days ago. The ED will be levied on IPL from season four (next year),' Bhujbal said. The deputy chief minister's statement comes barely three days after the Bombay High Court ordered that Pawar should be made a respondent in a suit challenging the state government's move to exempt IPL from ED.The suit filed by Shiv Sena leader Subhash Desai alleged that the decision to levy ED was taken by the state government in January but was scuttled under pressure from the NCP and Pawar. The Comptroller & Auditor General (CAG) said in its report that owing to the failure of the state government to tax IPL tournament, the state suffered a loss of Rs.4.99 crore in the first season of IPL in 2008.Incidentally, there was no mention of the state government's decision to tax IPL matches in an official statement issued by Chief Minister Ashok Chavan's office three days ago.
