Srinagar, May 5 (PTI) The Income Tax department is planning a drive against tax evaders in the Kashmir Valley and to begin with will use "coercive" tools in the law to get people to file annual returns on their income. "IT department has constituted a search wing, which will investigate the progress in the business of those who don''t pay taxes," Chief Commissioner of Income Tax G R Sofi said during an interaction here. The department collected Rs 120 crore as income tax from the Valley in 2008-09, and Rs 110 crore the previous year. This pales in comparison to Maharashtra''s Rs 1,43,587 crore, followed by Karnataka Rs 1,17,868 crore, Tamil Nadu Rs 12,562 crore, Andhra Pradesh Rs 9,077 crore and Gujarat at Rs 7,781 crore in 2008-09. Sofi said during the past two decades the tax collection by the department had remained abysmally low due to political unrest in the Valley, because of which "people were not in a position to pay the tax," he explained. The IT Commissioner said there were coercive sections in the Income Tax, which would ensure filing of tax by defaulters. "Under this Act, coercive actions are taken to ensure returns. Every individual should file their returns on time", Sofi said. "The department plans to launch a drive against tax evaders", he said and appealed to people to voluntarily disclose income through filing of annual returns. "It is their voluntary obligation under section 142 of the Income Tax Act to file returns", he said.
