Srinagar, Jun 18 (PTI) The Jammu and Kashmir government today said the panchayat elections in the state would be held in October in six phases. "To ensure transparent polls, the government has decided for a six-phase panchayat elections across the state in October," state minister for rural development A M Sagar said. Originally scheduled for May, the panchayat elections have been deferred to October in the wake of the ongoing tourist season in the state, he said. The tentative draft publication of the electoral rolls will be published on July 20, while the final list would be announced on August 20 following which the government will issue a notification for holding of the elections, Sagar said. Once the elections to the panchayats are over, the government would delegate powers to the grass root level by putting in place a three-tier form of governance.
